Dak Hall Geog. 1114 Dr. Steve Stadler 3 December 2010 Physical Geography: An Appendage of Life Across the world, there is a driving force that plays a major role in the everyday life of human civilization. This driving force is physical geography. Physical geography can best be defined as the “geography that deals with the exterior physical features and changes of the earth (Merriam-Webster). Out of the vast majority of phenomena that physical geography plays a role in, there is one major event that stands out. This event is determining of where to build the infrastructures of the world. This is important, because it has allowed human civilizations to grow at an extraordinary rate. The infrastructures of the world include both residential and commercial structures. One way in which physical geography plays a role in these infrastructures is by determining the location and building requirements as to be the most resistant to flooding. This helps to advance civilization, because it allows people to build long lasting and sustainable buildings. Physical geography helps to inform the population of what lands are subject to flooding, as well as what type of floodplain the land is in. This is import for sustaining the quality of human civilization because it allows people to know where they should build their infrastructures, as well as how they should build them to best combat flooding.
