PASSATO PROSSIMO HOW TO CHOOSE AVERE OR ESSERE ASK YOURSELF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS QUESTION 1: Is the verb I am conjugating reflexive? If you know the verb you are conjugating is a reflexive verb (i.e. the verb’s infinitive ends in –rsi instead of –re), then you know right away you MUST USE ESSERE. Francesco _____ (mettersi) la giacca. Francesco si è messo la giacca. *Make sure that your conjugated reflexive verb includes 3 parts: reflexive pronoun, conjugated essere , and the past participle that agrees with the subject of the sentence. Maria e Rebecca ________ (svegliarsi) alle otto. Maria e Rebecca si sono svegliate alle otto. Si is the appropriate pronoun because the subject is 3rd person, plural. Svegliat e is the correct past participle because the subject is 3 rd person, plural. QUESTION 2: If the verb is not reflexive, can it take a direct object? If the verb you are trying to conjugate can take a direct object, then it is a transitive verb and will be conjugated with AVERE.
