Music Appreciation Ludwig van Beethoven 1770-1827 May be most popular of the Classical composers The Fifth Symphony - one of his most popular pieces Beethoven’s Place in the Classical tradition Classical era 1750-1825 Anything that is concert music is pretty much classical music A classic is the best of its time and has lasted a long time 1750 is important because Bach died that year. He was the last and greatest of the Baroque composers. This is why Baroque ends and Classical era begins. Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn: most famous composers of the Classical era. They wrote symphonies, concertos, (both of which came in the classical era) Beethoven was a radical composer. He studied the music of Haydn and Mozart, but also created new things. Beethoven went beyond the older styles. Beethoven: born in 1770 Musically talented at a young age. 1787 – he went to study with Mozart in Vienna, but mother died, and then Mozart died, so he studies with Haydn. 1790s: he became known as a pianist. (3 instruments worth playing: piano, violin, and voice (Dr. Cole)) piano invented by Italian in 1730’s based off of the harpsichord After he started writing symphonies, he gradually became a composer Virtuoso (look up definition) Beethoven’s Career He was known s the great deaf one. He wrote some of his greatest works when deaf. End of decade was ready for the symphony and string quartet Quartet: most popular grouping Salon/chamber: small group in a small room Symphony needs a large group: 45 – 110 3 style periods of Beethoven early, middle, and late His early period was classical. In the idle period, he expresses himself. Symphony #3 was the first piece of the middle period. Symphony #3 shows the change in his style Eroica was originally written for Napoleon Bonaparte, but when he found out how bad of a guy he was, he erased his name, leaving a hole in the original manuscript. Eroica was written in 1803. It has 3 French horns Middle period is called the heroic decade Orchestras back then did not play at the same pitch as our modern pitch now.
