Speed Sign Design Concept: Task  #3 To: Speed Sign Design Committee From: Team1 – R&D CC: Prof. Silverstein Date: 11/22/09 Re: Speed Sign Design : Task #3 1. Reasons for choosing Speed Sign as the Team1’s project a. The Speed Sign project was chosen by online vote. Available speed signs are expensive despite their functional simplicity, leaving a significant margin for cost reduction. 2. Design Concepts/Goals a. Overview: The Speed Sign will be a package consisting of a directionally sensitive 1 2 digit large LED numeric display and a radar speed sensor. Data can be exported via USB to separately available and optional 3 rd party software. This software is nonessential to the sign’s function and is thus included in this product analysis as an optional feature. (Many neighborhoods may not need such capability) b. The Speed Sign will be able to mount to various common neighborhood objects (existing or constructed posts, trees, etc.) and will be powered by solar panel and battery with additional 110v charging capability. 3. Principle Components, description, and estimated wholesale prices a. Radar Gun - sensing component of the speed sign. i b. LED Numeric Display - Numeric LED displays are often used in sporting events and are perfect for making large, low energy, numeric displays. This display has 2 digits (speeds up to 99mph,kph) ii c. Plastic Enclosure – The plastic used in a speed sign is polycarbonate, which is commercially available for about $1 per pound. Assuming we use 2 pounds per speed sign, this cost totals to $2 per speed sign. Electric Component – The electrical components include the customized main circuit board, all microelectronic devices, wires, and a USB port for compatibility. iv e. 12V Sealed-Lead Acid (SLA) Batteries – used to power the system when no solar power is available. v f.
