Sheena Wadhwa Moore APES Block 4 7 March 2011 Pests and Pesticides 1. A pest is a destructive insect or other animal that attacks crops, food, livestock, etc and a pesticide is a substance used for destroying insects or other organisms harmful to cultivated plants or to animals. Biocide are chemicals developed to kill organisms that we consider undesirable while an herbicide is a substance that is toxic to plants and is used to destroy unwanted vegetation. An insecticide is a substance used for killing insects while a fungicide is a chemical that destroys fungus. 2. About 2.5 million tons of pesticides are used annually, worldwide. About 25,000 pesticides are used in the U.S. . Inert ingredients are used the most in the U.S. . Pesticide usage has increased 50 fold and toxicities have increased 10 fold since 1950. 3. DDT is dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, a potent insecticide. It became the world's most used pesticide. DDT was used until scientists discovered that it has long term effects on desirable species, it is stored in oils and fats and is transferred up food
