FREE RECALL TASK Results The mean recall proportion for the whole list was 0.533, with a standard deviation of 0.23. A one sample t-test was used to examine the effect of position on percentage recall. The first word on the list ( =0.93) was recalled significantly more often than other positions on the list, t (14) = -6.61, p<0.0001. The last word on the list ( =0.87) was recalled significantly more often than other position on the list, t (14) = -5.61, p<0.0001. Discussion In this lab, participants were given a random list of words to remember. They then had as much time as they needed to write down as many words possible. Supported by the serial position effect (Murdock,1962), this is supposed to show that words at the top and bottom of the list were more likely going to be recalled than those in the middle. The words that are towards the beginning of the list are more likely to be recalled because of the primary effect. This means
