Speirs, 1 History and Design There have been many truss designs that engineers have created over the years. Each one with their own unique design. One of the earlier truss designs is the pratt truss. This design used a combination of vertical and diagonal members. The pratt truss was designed by Caleb and Thomas Pratt in 1844. Thomas Pratt took the previous, Howe truss design, and decided to improve upon it (Pratt Truss Bridge). He did this by switching the materials use to make the diagonal member from wood to steel and the vertical members to wood. He also changed the angle of the diagonal to be in the opposite direction (Types of Truss Structures). The vertical members are in compression and the diagonal members are in tension. This made a more efficient design since the steel in the diagonal members can be reduced (Types of Truss Structures). An experiment was performed in 2015, on a sixty-five-year-old pratt truss bridge to test how much stress the members felt. The test revealed the bridge was still well in the parameters of allowable flex and load on the diagonal and vertical members (Laurendeau). Benefits and Disadvantages The pratt truss came with many benefits from its design. The largest benefit was the ability to calculate the tension and compression very easily for different applications. Since it
