1 Chapter 59 Ecosystem Ecology An ecosystem is the sum of all the organisms living within its boundaries and all the abiotic factors with which they interact Aquarium Lake Ecosystem ecology focuses on the movement of energy and materials through organisms and their communities Major processes – Energy flow – Biomass production – Biogeochemical cycling Regardless of an ecosystem’s size it is important to remember that: – Energy flows through an ecosystem – Matter (chemicals) cycles within an ecosystem Food Webs and Energy Flow Trophic structure – The feeding relationships between organisms in a community – A key factor in community dynamics Food chains – Link the trophic levels from producers to top carnivores Figure 59.2
