Claire Fossi ENG 338-302 4 May 2020 Anne Frank Who is Anne Frank exactly? We know her as a young Jewish girl living in the times of Nazi Germany that hid in an attic with her family just to survive and wrote a diary about it. How- ever, there is much more to her story than just that. Anne was born to Otto and Edith Frank in 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany. She had an older sister named Margot, who was three years older than her. Due to the horrible economy and Hitler and the Nazis starting to take over, the Franks decided to move to Amsterdam. Things were going quite well for the Frank family. Anne started a new school, made friends, learned Dutch, and Otto’s work life was going well. As they say, all good things must come to an end and, unfortunately, this was the case for the Franks. In 1939, when Anne was just 10 years old, the Nazis invaded Poland and the infamous World War II began. About 8 months later, they invaded the Netherlands where the Frank family resided. Things just kept getting worse and worse after that for Jews. All their rights were basi- cally stripped away from them and they were segregated. Jewish children had to attend separate schools, they could not go to the park or the movies and had to shop at Jewish owned places only. Jews were also banned from owning their own businesses, meaning Otto lost his company and work. This was just the beginning for Anne and her family. It is now 1942 and Anne just turned 13 years old. She received a diary for her birthday. This was the perfect gift because she loved to write and wanted to become a journalist. Anne did not know it at the time, but she was about to have a lot to write about. Shortly after her birthday, the Nazis got stricter regarding Jews’ lives and were forcing them to wear the Star of David on

their clothing. People were starting to get phone calls about labor camps in Germany, and this made the Frank family worrisome. They decided to go into hiding in an annex in Otto’s business, which he had furnished months before this. They shared the annex with four other people and had to remain quiet and careful so that they did not get caught. Anne and the others spent two years in the annex. To help pass the time and keep her busy, Anne decided to write in her diary.
