Malay IND301 Milestone 5 Template Introduction paragraph (approx. 150–200 words): In April of 2018, the Defense Department petitioned for $9.39 billion for unmanned systems and various associated technologies for the fiscal year 2019 budget. This proposition comprises the financing for the acquisition of 3,447 new air, ground, and waterborne drones. The FY 2019 budget proposal represents a significant expansion in drone spending over the 2018 requested budget, which contained approximately $7.5 billion in drone related spending and orders for 807 drones. This document forms, some of the largest and most significant drone-related expenditures in the FY 2019 budget application. The United States increasingly relies on unmanned aerial vehicles – better known as drones- to target insurgents and terrorist groups around the world (Rudaski 2014). Another application for the use of UAS is that of law enforcement for search and rescue operations. Artificial intelligence and autonomous weapons are key to the national security of the U.S. Because of the advances in artificial intelligence and autonomous weapons systems this technology saves the lives of soldiers as well as civilians and autonomous weapons systems and remotely operated vehicles could augment our security forces. Outline: I. Supporting Point 1 A. Topic sentence: The United States is at the forefront of artificial intelligence and autonomous weapons systems innovations. B. Supporting detail: “The United States currently has sixty-five advanced MQ-9 Reapers, and it plans to receive four hundred more of them.” (Williams 2013). C. Supporting detail: “The U.S. military has procured more than 250 MQ-1 Predator drones” (Williams 2013). D. Supporting detail: “The UK has developed a $225 million jet-propelled drone capable of hitting targets on other continents. Known as the Taranis, it was named after the Celtic god of thunder” (Qureshi 2020). E.
