The first important thing we need to teach all staff is good communication skills. Good communication is vital and key to a successful team. For example, say you have a patient you are seeing that needs suction. You don’t know this, because it wasn’t communicated to you, but the durable medical equipment department is shorthanded that day. Therefor it took several hours before they could get the suction machine out to this patient. If they had just reached back out to the nurse who ordered the suction and asked if she was able to take it to the patient herself, this could’ve saved the patient several hours of waiting for this equipment; and the patient could’ve been made comfortable, more quickly and effectively. We have to communicate. Tara Cortes says this in the article Building Interprofessional Teams
