Lauren Brough – Midterm Exam – Spring 2020 – ISAS 610 9040 1. Do we really need a major change in the way the IS function is structured? Are the necessary changes just minor modifications to accommodate normal growth in computer uses? What are your thoughts and research in this regard? For now, the IS function does not need to be changed in a major way. Minor changes should absolutely be expected and anticipated with the usual development in technology and trends. However, there will be a need for IS functions to change in a major way eventually. Technology’s growth can be divided into 4 different eras that are each separated by a major change (Niederman, 2016). Information system jobs start to appear in the first era from the 1960s to the 1970s. IS jobs are general where only one professional designs, programs and runs applications. Hardware, storage and programing languages change the market and force IS into its next era. The 2 rd era is from the mid-1970s to the 1990s where system users first began to expand outside previous boundaries. Information economy and a new demand for those who could engage in the production of information processing/communication specialize those in the information systems world. The 3 rd era, from 1990s – 2000s, occurred when the industry’s focus shifted from hardware/software to telecommunications. This change came with a huge industry boom and a new community of information system personnel (Niederman, 2016). Technology was being integrated into business more regularly and required more people dedicated to information systems for marketing, management and logistics. The final era is from the 2000s to now, an era initiated by the beginning of social media. Technology is portable and easy to use; social media opens an entirely new source for information and has become even more valuable. Advanced degrees are more valuable in the IS space and jobs are in exploding in demand and scope. Given that the history of information systems and their function have shown major changes every few decades since it’s emergence, it would be ignorant to assume that a major change in its structure is not coming ever again. Users contributing to information system data are now hyper aware of their privacy, so ethical and legal implications from the social media boom could impact the function (Bourgeois, 2019). Necessary minor modifications will need to be made for the remainder of the fourth era, but a major change will inevitably come along and push technology into the next 5 th era, continuing its growth and relevance.

2. A vision is not the responsibility of the CIO; it is the responsibility of the CEO or the top management team. Do you agree or disagree? Why? I would argue that the vision is the responsibility of everyone working at the company especially upper level management including the CIO. The CEO is usually associated with being the dreamer of the C-level corporate jobs, but it could not be solely their responsibility to focus on the vision. The CIO tends to be more specialized and analytical than the typical CEO who is responsible for more general tasks and is valued for their people skills. A CIO is
