Compare and Contrast Into Synthesis Gregory Bateson: An idea is “a difference that makes a difference .” Pointing out similarities and differences is not enough to pass Expository Writing. You must select particularly interesting and relevant differences, then show how they make a difference to our understanding of the authors. THURMAN unique traits SIMILARITIES LUHRMANN unique traits *No God *Describe religions *Horizon believes in God *No “self” *Religions give comfort *Horizon believes in self *Believes in system or meaning *Luhrmann sees system she he describes *Meditation/Trance describes as *Lexicon brainwashing Now: how do the differences between these two processes change our understanding of one or both processes? Similarities alone cannot provide any new information. They can merely reinforce information that was already there. They are not differences, and they do not make a difference. Compare and contrast methods will not provide any new information; they will just put items of information we already know next to each other. EX: Though both Thurman and Luhrmann describe conversion processes, Thurman’s conversion does not include a God, whereas Horizon Church bases its initiation around
