Diagramming An Author Goal: Figure out how an author’s ideas are structured, both to increase your understanding of those ideas and to begin thinking about how you’ll be structuring your own essay. THESIS The thesis is the sentence or group of sentences that expresses an author’s central, organizing idea. It tends to appear early in our readings, and it should appear in the introduction to your essays—preferably at the end of the introductory paragraph.
