Main Ideas in Ways of Seeing 1. The social presence of a woman is different in kind from that of a man Man’s presence depends on the promise of power which he embodies;  presence may be fabricated, but the pretence is always towards a power  he exercises on others. Woman’s presence expresses her own attitude to herself, and defines  what can and cannot be done to her.  Everything a woman does contributes to her presence.  Presence for a  woman is intrinsic to her person.
