Broadus 1 Ask Me Some time when the river is ice ask me mistakes I have made. Ask me whether what I have do ne is my life. Oth ers have come in their slow way into my thought, and some have tried to help or to hurt: ask me what difference their strongest love or hate has made. I will listen to what you say. You and I can turn and look at the silent river and wait. We know the current is there, hidden; and there are comings and goings from miles away that hold the stillness exactly before us. What the river says, that is what I say.

Broadus 2 Erinn Broadus English 200 Terence Elliot April 6, 2011 An Explication of “Ask Me” by William Stafford William Stafford titled the poem I chose “Ask Me” of which I obtained from our literary text. (Kennedy, Goia, pg. 643) This is a more contemporary poem, be- ing that the sentences do not finish at the end of each line, they instead move on to the next providing the reader with an easy visual flow throughout the sequence of the poem. The theme of the poem is life, and its passing ways, very familiar to a river which is used as an ongoing metaphor. Some time when the river is ice ask me mistakes I have made. Ask me whether what I have do ne is my life. Oth ers. .. Stafford references the river as an example of passing life, so he emphasizes that when it is frozen, or when life freezes momentarily one can ask mistakes he has made, it is left up to assumption that otherwise life will pass in a way that
