Renal Physiology Study Guide Know the amount and distribution of water and major electrolytes in body compartments. Explain the roles and the importance of the kidney in the maintenance of water and electrolyte balances. Define important anatomical structures within the kidney and understand their interrelationships. Know special characteristics of the renal blood supply. Describe the principles of glomerular ultrafiltration: criteria for glomerular filtrate general size limits of particles filtered structural correlates of glomerular capillary ultrafilter application of the Starling equation to glomerular capillaries to determine the forces involved in the filtration process and able to calculate net filtration pressure Define autoregulation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and renal blood flow. Understand how constriction or dilation of the afferent arteriole by itself, or of the efferent arteriole by itself, will affect renal blood flow and glomerular filtration rate. Describe extrinsic factors regulating glomerular filtration rate and their mechanisms of action. Know the magnitude of glomerular filtration rate in a healthy person. Understand concept of clearance by the kidney. Determine glomerular filtration rate quantitatively using renal clearance formula. Describe relationship of inulin clearance and creatinine clearance to glomerular filtration rate. Understand how serum creatinine levels can be used to see whether the magnitude of GFR is normal Define renal tubular reabsorption and renal tubular secretion. Know the general structural characteristics of an epithelium and understand the concept
