Physics 103A Lab A: Young’s Modulus - Elasticity in Length
Image of page 1
1. Introduction: This lab allowed us to investigate the Young’s Modulus of elasticity by stretching the thin wire. Depending on the magnitude of the force, a body can deform and the relationship between the force and deformation is proportional, known as Hooke’s Law. The elastic limit of a substance is the amount of force applied that produces a recoverable amount of deformation. Stress is defined as Stress=F/A which is the force applied to a thin wire over the cross sectional area. Tensile strain is defined as Strain= . If l / l Δ Hooke’s law is valid within the elastic limit, the ratio of stress to strain gives the Young’s Modulus of elasticity Y which is Y= stress/strain= (F/A)( ). Y depends only on the l / l Δ material from which the wire is made. 2. Experimental Procedure: For the lab experiment, we first made sure the bottom platform is leveled using the screws on the side and the bubble level. After confirming that the apparatus is leveled, we placed the 1 kg weight hanger on the lower end of the wire. Then we adjusted the

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
