Chapter 1: The Challenge of Human Resource Management ∙       What is corporate social responsibility? o   Corporate social responsibility- the responsibility of the firm to   act in the best interests of the people and communities affected by   its activities o   By being social responsible, companies are getting a better bottom   line o   Workers applying for jobs are saying corporate responsibility is   now more important to their job selections ∙       What is total quality management (TQM) and how does it differ   from Six Sigma? o   Total quality management (TQM)- a set of principles and practices   who core ideas include understanding customer needs, doing things   right the first time, and striving for continuous improvement §  Didn’t work well for responding to customer needs and improving   productivity. Managers viewed quality as a quick fix and became   disillusioned when results didn’t come easily. Usually only work   because managers have made major changes in their philosophies and HR   programs o   Six Sigmas- a process used to translate customer needs into a set   of optimal tasks that are performed in concert with one another §  Includes major changes in management philosophy and HR programs §  Statistical method §  By examining the optimal process, it can have a powerful effect on   the quality of products, the performance of customer service, and the   professional development of employees §  Catches mistakes before they happen ∙       What are the advantages of a policy of “no layoffs”? o   Fiercely loyal, more productive workforce, higher customer   satisfaction, readiness to snap back with the economy, a recruiting   edge, workers who aren’t afraid to innovate, knowing their jobs are safe ∙       What is offshoring and how does it differ from outsourcing? o   Offshoring-the business practice of sending jobs to other countries o   Outsourcing- contracting outside the organization to have work   done that formerly was done by internal employees §  Offshoring is sending jobs out of the country, outsourcing is just
