Parallel Characters :Mr. Shiftlet from “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” and Hulga from “Good Country People” The main importance of them is to demonstrate the disillusioned view on life. II. In terms of physical appearance, O’Connor made the two characters very similar. a. First of all, they are not very attractive in the first place- i. “He had long black slick hair that hung flat from a part in the middle to beyond the tips of his ears on either side. His face descended in forehead for more than half its length and ended suddenly with his features just balanced over a jutting steel trap jaw.” ii. “Big spectacled Joy Hulga.” 1. described as stout. 2. Additionally, in the text, there’s a place where her mother thinks that if it weren’t for Hulga’s heart condition, she could see her daughter lecturing and looking like a scarecrow. b.
