Name of Text: The Life You Save May Be Your Own Plot Synopsis (Be brief yet descriptive) Mr. Shiftlet, wanders the country and comes across and old woman and her handicapped daughter. The old woman wants him to marry her daughter, so she allows him to stay at their house and fix things. He manages to fix the car, and agrees to marry her daughter Lucynell. After they are married, they stop at a diner, where he abandons Lucynell and drives off. Notable Features (give 3 Devices and tell Effect) Symbolism- Shiftlet’s arm is missing, which means that he is physically not whole. However, it can be inferred that because he is not whole physically, he not whole spiritually as well, which means that he is missing God and/or religion. Characterization- Shiftlet is seen as a wanderer and seems to lack a home or place to go. He may be unsatisfied with whatever life he had, and seems to be seeking something, which also supports the idea that he is missing something spiritually. Character speech- Shiftlet is also somewhat of a philosopher, which means that he has a firm grasp on life and reality; he knows what life is about and what the future holds for him. However, because he already knows so much about life, he also is aware of the suffering that is in store. This seems to be why he is wandering and looking for something to believe in. Quotations (List a quotation to accompany each feature above) He swung both his whole and his short arm slowly so that they indicated an expanse of sky and his figure formed a crooked cross” (52). “The tramp stood looking at her and didn’t answer” (52). “…but listen lady, what is a man” (55)?
