Name of Text: The Displaced Person Plot Synopsis (Be brief yet descriptive) Mrs. McIntyre hires a Polish immigrant (Guizac) to do work on her farm. He ends up being much more productive than her long time worker, Mr. Shortley. Afraid of being fired, the Shortleys leave town and Mrs. Shortly dies from a stroke. Mrs. McIntyre keeps trying to fire the Polish worker, but can’t seem to bring herself to do it. One day, he is injured in a farm accident, and Mrs. McIntyre becomes mentally and physically ill, so the farm basically falls apart. Notable Features (give 3 Devices and tell Effect) Diction- there are many words that have to do with religion, which conveys the idea that this story is not just about a Polish immigrant coming to work for a farm. It indicates that this story has a spiritual message. Foreshadowing- At one point in the story, Mrs. McIntyre and Mrs. Shortley are discussing Guizac and Mrs. Shortley says that Mrs. McIntyre will save money unless a terrible accident occurs, which foreshadows the accident that will happen later in the story .Use of the phrase “displaced person”- everyone addresses Guizac as a displaced person, which signifies that they don’t view him as a real person. The only people they consider to be actual people are those living in the country and on the farm with him. They see Guizac as an outsider that doesn’t belong there. Quotations (List a quotation to accompany each feature above) “That man is my salvation! “(220), the presence of a priest, “ …no man is more of a Christian (223). “Maybe, if don’t know terrible accident occur” (223) “The Displaced Person had expected them to work as hard as he worked himself…”(254)
