Things Fall Apart  11.11.09 How does Achebe use settings, characters, and plot to create a theme? *Do not neglect to examine literary devices, structure, point of view, and word choice.  They are also contributors to meaning. Alterity - “otherness,” a term used to discuss things that are foreign to us; dealing  with the “other.” “other”= that which is not us. o The characters of  Things Fall Apart  deal with alterity. Characterization: FOIL- in each of these  pairs, one character  makes another seem  better or worse by  comparison PARALLEL- these pairs  of characters have  something in common  (usually has something  big to do with the plot) CATALYST- these  characters do something to  progress the plot  Okonko and his  father, Unoka Nwoye and  Ikemefuna Nwoye and  Okonkwo Obierika and  Okonko Ekwefi and  Okonkwo Mr. Brown and
