Pham Essay Outline Why did either the US or Canada enter the First World War? (Topic 5) I. Intro a. Time period- i. The actual war is 1914-18. It begins when Archduke Ferdinand is assassinated and ends when Germany surrenders- Treaty of Versailles. ii. US official entrance is 1917. b. Thesis- The US entered WWI for ideological, political, and economic reasons. II. The US entry into WWI was influenced by ideological factors. a. Germany was an ambitious country that sought more control over the continent and wanted to become a world power. It wanted to avoid economic encirclement, so it built up its military and devised the Schlieffen Plan (in event of a war, France is taken out first, then Russia); also invaded Belgium. i. The pre-emptive measures made it seem as if Germany was preparing for war, which in turn portrayed them as evil and power hungry. b. Germany was gaining a lot of land, and people began to fear its authoritarian government; President Wilson wanted to make the world safe for democracy
