Being suspended in water is essential to proper functioning of many proteins, and thus to life o Moderation of temperature (extreme temperatures kill) Temperature of liquid depends on how fast its molecules move. Before water molecules can move faster, hydrogen bonds must be broken, which consumes a lot of energy. It takes a lot of energy to increase temperature of water Due to the ability of water to resist temperature changes, the Earth can absorb a lot of solar energy without much change in temperature Prevents extreme swings in temperature and improves stability of Earth’s environment (creates a habitable planet) Ex: Coastal areas have mild climate because water resists temperature changes Moderation of body temperature Before water molecules can leave liquid water as water vapor, hydrogen bonds must be broken, which again consumes energy For every water molecule that leaves, the remaining liquid gets cooler.
