Erinn Broadus Criminology 330 April 29, 2011 The American dream is a ladder of self destruction and diminished priorities in an everlasting attempt to gain the highest material success. As our notes state, it is an “open competition” that bases its focus on the reward, and places very little emphasis on the means by which those rewards are accumulated. (Trojan, Lecture Notes, 4/20/2011) Agnews’s General Strain Theory indicates three types of deviance-producing strain: failure to achieve positively valued goals, removal of positively valued stimuli and confrontation with negative stimuli. (Akers & Sellers, 2009) Kathy, Behrani and Lester all face these types of strain in an effort to survive and adhere to the American dream. Kathy has been evicted from the house that her father left her, due to unpaid taxes. It was a five-hundred dollar charge that kicked her out of her house and left her desperate and living off the help of others. It is out of this dire desperation that she ac- ted in the way that she did-- giving up, ultimately. According to Strain Theory, these cir- cumstances could be define by her failure to achieve positively valued goals. The notes detail that failing to achieve expectations can have a much more pained effect than simply failing to achieve aspirations and Kathy’s situation proves no different.
