Andrew Medoro Ms. Laura Jarboe History 112CA 21 April 2011 The Quest for Power in Modern American Society Throughout the majority of the 20 th Century, the United States of America has played a prominent role within world affairs. This is due to our premier place on the world stage as one of the most premier economic and military powerhouses in the present day. Following the conclusion of World War II America was clearly one of the most influential nations on Earth, rivaled arguably by only the Soviet Union. This rivalry led to a stalemate the likes of which had yet to be seen across world history The Cold War. During the Cold War, both rival nations sought to enhance their power, influence, and ideals throughout the world. This process was most easily visible through each nation’s respective military buildup leading to a power struggle, the likes of which had yet been seen in history. America’s primary goal following the conclusion of World War Two was to increase its influence and power worldwide, in order to best prevent the further spread of communism. During the Cold War the United States adopted a policy of containment, that is “the policy of checking the expansion or influence of communist nations by making strategic alliance, aiding friendly nations, and supporting weaker states in areas of conflict” (Berkin et al., 609). This policy was fervently developed and initiated across many scenes of conflict around the world none more so than in the conflict in Vietnam.
