JD Armor Com 135 Refutational Speech Intro: I. Five hours of studying, one hundred points and fifty minutes to take the test, yet all that matters is the little red grade at the top. Does this really measure how intelligent a person is and how successful they can be? II. Here in the twenty first century students are assessed on what they have learned by a grade, even though it is quite obvious that a single letter is not an adequate representation of what an individual knows, therefore grades should be done with III. This is relevant to all of us because we are currently in an environment where the knowledge that we posses is represented by a few simple letters. IV. I have done a significant amount of research on this topic and I also have been the recipient of hundreds of these simple little letters that mean so much. V. In this speech I will discuss why grades are not an accurate representation of student’s knowledge; they reduce student’s interests, have been found to cause stress, and should be replaced with a better form of assessment. Transition: Grades are intended to represent what a student has learned, but after years of being involved in the education system, can a piece of paper with letters represent all their years of hard work Body: Causal Appeal I. Grades are not an accurate representation of what a student understands they aren’t valid, reasonable, or objective. A. It is unfair that after an entire semester learning material in one subject area, that a student receives one letter to represent how well they understood that area. 1. One letter says nothing about how a student performed, what that student understands, and where that student may need work. A student could possess the knowledge and potential to cure rare diseases, but may be held back when they can’t get into medical school because they failed eleventh grade biology,
