Crime Analysis Functions/Types Example 1 (Reuland, 1997 identifies 3 functions) Functions o Tactical Analysis – analysis of crime and other incidents to support resource deployment. Involves detecting patterns in crime or potential for crime to enhance patrol, surveillance, stakeouts seems that she is indicating analytical type function to enhance field operations (short term) BUT this contradicts Gottlieb who indicates that activities aimed at resource allocation is a long term goal (Strategic Analysis) o Investigative Support – identifying crime suspect correlations using multiple data sets to assist in investigations and improve arrests o Administrative Analysis (referred to as crime reporting) – preparation and dissemination of reports for variety of requestors o Crime Prevention – ID locations, times of day, or situation where crime appear to cluster in order to harden Example 2 (Gottlieb, 1998 identifies 3 types of analysis processes AND 8 functions Types o Tactical Analysis - provides information to assist operations personnel (patrol and investigative officers) in the identification of specific and immediate crime problems and the arrest of criminal offenders to promote quick response to field situations ( short term ) o Strategic Analysis – concerned with long range problems and projection of long- term increases or decreases in crime (crime trends). Preparation of crime statistical summaries – often referred to as exception reports because reflect deviations from norm – and provision of resource acquisition and allocation information (long term) o Administrative Analysis – provision of economic, geographic, or social information to administrators Functions o Crime Pattern Analysis – identification of crime patterns and crime series (looking for similarities in dates times, and methods of by which crimes committed) o Forecasting Future Crime – based on crime pattern analysis, crime analysts attempt to predict location, times of future events o Target Profile Analysis – identifies what type of person, structure, vehicle, or establishment is likely to become a target (victim). Information used to develop tactical action plans and directed patrol plans

o Investigative Support – search manual/automated data files for previously arrested persons matching suspect/event descriptions o Provide Support data to COP and crime prevention programs – provide form and substance to what otherwise may be seen as random criminal events. This aids community and CP officers in identifying “true” crime problem and developing effective tactical and strategic plans. o
