Having a professional sports team in a community most directly affects the people that live there. The community is the one who pays the taxes to fund the teams, uses the facilities, and reap both the positive and negative consequences of having a professional sports team funded by tax revenue. There are many positive aspects of having a professional sports team in a city funded by tax revenue. Having a professional sports team generates a lot of revenue for the city in many different ways. The city gets revenue from all sales that relate to the team including ticket sales, concessions, and souvenirs. The city also generates revenue from other sources that are indirectly related to the team. A professional sports team brings a lot of tourism dollars to a city as well. Fans of other teams will visit the city to watch the games. These out of town fans stay in hotels, eat at restaurants, and visit other city attractions which help the local economy. It will bring local jobs to the city as well. This excitement of having a professional sports team will entice more people to move to the city. Having professional sports teams in a city instills a sense of community pride. Especially when the team is successful, it gives the city something to rally behind and lift their spirits. Negative aspects of having a professional sports team funded by tax revenue also exist. Having a professional sports team in a city is very expensive. Building a stadium, which is funded by tax dollars, cost in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Cities with professional sports teams will undoubtedly have higher tax rates than cities that do not have one. Having a losing sports team brings negative attention to a city and deters people from wanting to live there. The negative publicity may affect the social culture of the city in an undesirable way.
