Will Boas ENG 111: Rhetorical Analysis 12/8/2010 Remember the Titans: “Coach Boone’s Speech” "United we stand, Divided we fall" is universal; unless people united together, it is easy for them to be destroyed. This philosophy plays itself out in the 2000 movie “Remember the Titans.” In the movie, which retells the story of the 1971 T.C. Williams High School football team, Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) is hired to replace Bill Yoast (Will Patton), a successful coach who has been nominated for the Virginia High School Hall of Fame. It is determined that if Boone loses one game, he will be fired. In a show of respect, Boone offers Yoast a position as assistant coach. After initially rejecting the offer, Yoast accepts after the Caucasian players pledge to boycott the team if he isn’t a coach. As a result, the team is segregated. Located in Virginia, a state known for its history of slavery and racial segregation, the movie explores the depth of hatred and persecution simply because of another person’s skin color and the possibilities for change. The date is also significant, as 1971 is shortly after civil rights laws were passed to guarantee equal access to a quality education. The team travels to Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania for training camp before the season and starts to grow as a team. Training camp is meant to sharpen the player’s skills , while promoting teambuilding and character building. While segregated, the team is in disarray. There is no teamwork or team unity whatsoever. On the field, players of different color would not work together. Because of the color of their teammate’s skin, the Titans would not block for one another, hold their respective assignments, or simply put themselves on the line for their teammates. Off the field, there were frequent fights between the players of different races over things like playing time and putting up posters on the wall in the dorm rooms. The tension found

in the team was not limited to the players. Coaches were often found arguing over strategies as well as their respective responsibilities as coaches. The team was going down a dangerous path that would not lead to a successful season as a result. With team chemistry and morale at a low, Coach Boone, who acts as the moderator, had finally had enough. In the middle of the night, while all the players and coaches are asleep, he wakes everyone up and instructs them to follow him for a little jog through the woods. They follow him to the battlefield where the Battle of Gettysburg was fought and subsequent cemetery is located. There, Coach Boone gives an inspiring speech to the players and coaches. Country music is played while the team jogs through the woods. I believe this music genre is an accurate
