Will Boas ENG 112: Writer’s Journal 1/12/2011 I found “The Veldt” to be a very mysterious and slightly adventurous excerpt. It fast forwarded to the future where everything in the Hadley’s house was automatic. They had all sorts of future technologies that I may experience in the future. The family had an automatic chef that produced food practically out of thin air, a shoe shiner, as well as something to dress them and bath them. This kind of advancement in technology is something I think about all the time, and it is definitely something that I would like to utilize in the future. However I do have a concern about the great technological advancements that will be made, and it is illustrated in this story.

Unformatted text preview: When the parents mention shutting down the house for a while, the children are very opposed to it. The son responded in saying “that would be dreadful! Would I have to tie my own shoes instead of letting the shoe tier do it? And brush my own teeth and comb my hair and give myself a bath?” He went on to say “I don’t want to do anything but look listen and smell; what else is there to do? My fear is that with these new technologies such as a shoe tier, society will become extremely lethargic and lazy, not having any determination to accomplish something or appreciate hard work because everything is done for you....
