Will Boas Homework 5 1. I would estimate the May 12 th Wenchuan Earthquake in China to register as an eleven on the Modified Richter Scale. The earthquake caused a considerable amount of damage over a vast area of China. Practically every building was affected in some way, with many buildings being completely destroyed. A good number of buildings, many of which being schools, did not meet the standards for structural security. The Chinese Earthquake Administration indicated that buildings in Wenchuan would have had to been supported to withstand level 11 intensity. The earthquakes caused widespread landslides that resulted in a lot of damage. After a mudslide hit, some villages looked like they never existed. 2. The earthquake originated in the Longmenshan fault zone. This fault zone is considered a convergent boundary. It was formed by the collision of the Indian Sub-Continent and the Eurasian plate, which in turn created the Himalayan Mountains. The earthquake was the result of around 2,000 years of pressure being released.
