Politics 142 8/23 Politics- Who gets WHAT, WHEN, HOW Civil Rights- Statues/Laws enacted after the civil war to prevent discrimination against RACE, COLOR, AGE, RELIGION. Civil Liberties- Rights guaranteed to all citizens by the Constitution. Their purpose is to put restraints on the power of the government. Examples- Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion Examples of Civil Liberties being oppressed- Mosque in New York City, Arizona Immigration Law Movement- A series of activities to attain a goal (in Civil Rights). Constitution- Article I Legislative Power Article II Executive Power Article III Judicial Power Article IV States powers and limits Article V Amendments Article VI Federal Power (Law of the Land) Article VII Ratification 1st Freedom of religion, speech, the press, assembly, and petition. 2nd Enumerates the right to keep and bear arms 3rd Bans forced quartering of soldiers. 4th Interdiction of unreasonable searches and seizures; a search warrant is required to search persons or property. 5th Indictments; due process; self-incrimination; double jeopardy; rules for eminent domain. 6th Rights to a fair and speedy public trial, to a notice of accusations, to confront the accuser, to subpoenas, and to counsel. 7th Provides for the right to trial by jury in civil cases. September 25, 1789 December 15, 1791 Full text 8th Bans cruel and unusual punishment, and excessive fines or bail 9th Unenumerated rights 10th Limits the powers of the federal government to only those specifically granted by the constitution. 11th Immunity of states from suits from out-of-state citizens and foreigners not living within the state borders. Lays the foundation for sovereign immunity. 12th Revises presidential election procedures.
