Pearl Harbor, Japan Conquers the East Made over 400 years of progress in 40 years Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931, the rest of china in 1937, and controlled most of China’s coastal cities by 1939 The soviet union and the Japanese were clashing at the Manchurian/Mongolian border o After that the soviet union and Japan signed a treaty of neutrality Except for the navy, America’s armed forces were insignificant o Navy was the first line of defense The Neutrality Act of 1937 prohibited arms sales The US got squeezed out of China, ruining our Open Door policy The Japanese armed forces were the real power in Japan, not the royal family The first two attack waves were extremely successful The Japanese air group commander requested a third wave to finish off Pearl Harbor but it never came o If this attack had come The Japanese would probably have won the war in the Pacific o The submarine base, shipyard, fuel stations, and the carriers Lexington and Enterprise were left untouched
