World War I Queen Victoria was Kaiser Wilhelm’s grandmother Japan wanted dominance in the far east o They had defeated china in the saino-Japanese War o Defeated Russia in Russian-Japanese war US and Japan were not yet major imperial powers Germans built the German high seas fleet to try to become a major maritime power o The fleet was supposed to be large enough to neutralize the British royal navy The French stayed out of the naval race between the British and the Germans The British couldn’t allow it’s fleet to become less than twice the size of anyone else’s fleet o Developed a new battleship called the dreadnaught o The dreadnaught changed the face of warfare The French and British both saw Germany as the chief threat to their national authority The Triple Alliance o Germany o Austria-Hungary o Italy To counter the Triple Alliance the Triple Entente was created Triple Entente o France o Russia o Britain o If Germany attacked the Russians the French would come to their aid and vice versa The Russian army was the largest in Europe but the slowest to mobilize The German’s plan was to knock out France before Russia was able to
