The President of the United States has been thought of as the most powerful man in the world for decades. It is hard to argue against the fact that the man leading the US influences the entire world. However, many people believe that this is not the case. Several theories have emerged, especially in last century in the United States, that state that there may be someone or something else behind the scenes, controlling more than we know. The secret Illuminati society is one of the groups that people think are secretly controlling almost every aspect of worldwide events. Theories and rumors have arisen claiming the Illuminati have influence on everything from sports games to the election of the President. Many of the biggest celebrities of the modern era have been rumored to be somehow involved in this secret group. However, no proof has ever surfaced confirming such accusations. Lubnow 2 them. It is because of this that the extent of the Illuminati’s influence is greatly exaggerated. The main thing that people do not realize is that there are two drastically different accounts of who exactly the Illuminati are. The modern day Illuminati are what these rumors revolve around. However, in the 18 th century, the first secret Illuminati society did in fact have a huge influence on the world. The two groups, despite the sharing the same name and what some people think are the same goals, are actually quite different. The original Illuminati began in 1776 in the German state of Bavaria when German philosopher Adam Weishaupt saw the church and the state becoming more and more intertwined (George 81). The aim of his new group, The Order of Perfectablists, was the abolition of all monarchical governments and state religions in Europe (Gruber). His ideas of an education system and a government spread rapidly throughout the world, and by the year 1785 he had planted this idea inside some of the greatest minds of the time, including Americans Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine (George 81). The influence of this idea is still clearly seen today, especially in the First Amendment of the United States

Lubnow 3 Constitution. The idea that the government “shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” (US Const., amend. I), was greatly influenced by Weishaupt since both Jefferson and Paine, two of the most influential people of their time, were known followers of some of his teachings (George 81). The influence of Weishaupt’s Order was not confined to just Germany and the United States. In fact, it even played a large role in the French Revolution. In 1789, a French politician named Honoré Gabriel Riqueti was sent to Germany on a government mission. During his time in Bavaria, he soon met several of Weisaupt’s followers, and became enthralled with their
