Brian Lubnow T-TH 8-9:15 9/16/10 PSA Assignment #1 Washington’s suggestion for southern African Americans in his Atlanta Compromise was essentially that African Americans need to work hard to earn the respect of their white neighbors. He explains that they must begin from the bottom of life and build up from there (Washington).When he says “nor should we permit our grievances to overshadow our opportunities,” he recognizes the fact that racism and segregation are going to happen, but says that by working hard, true freedom will eventually be accomplished (Washington). Social equality will be reached, but not for a while. His plan is definitely a more passive suggestion. I think Washington is not only trying to encourage the African American community, but reach out to the white community as well. This speech is as much an olive branch to whites as it is a message to blacks. The biggest problem with this approach is the fact that any change, if any, would likely be very slow moving. Most African Americans want change
