²0–0²– 11 1 LECTURE 7: MUSCULOSKELETA L SYSTEM KIN 3510 Physical Activity and Aging Ayesha Saleem, PhD Feb 11, 2020 Learning Outcomes What is the basic structure of skeletal muscle. List and describe the changes with age in: 1) muscle morphology (body composition, fiber #, fiber size, fiber type, capillarization) What are the implications of these changes? 2) Biochemical properties (energy production pathways) Differentiate between muscle hypertrophy , atrophy and hyperplasia . What is sarcopenia ? List some of the signs/symptoms associated with sarcopenia. What are the underlying myogenic factors that lead to the development of sarcopenia? List a few age-associated diseases of the MSK system. What is the effect of physical activity on the musculoskeletal system (fiber size, capillarization, body composition, neural innervation). What are myokines and what is their function? What is the effect of physical activity on myokines. List two myokines discussed in this lecture.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
