20-03- 03 Nutrition for Older Adults Ma n y things change with regards to aging and many factors play a role in food choices: Economic issues Social change Lack of support Inconvenience of meal planning/preparation Dietary intake patterns change protein energy malnutrition (PEM) less overall kcal’s needed Ca 2+ , Vit D supplementation may be necessary certain micronutrients may be more important to get enough of – reduced appetite and compromised food intake Physiological Changes in Aging & Nutrition ↓ in Lean Tissue Mass /↑ body fat ↓ in RMR – reduced energy needs Loss of bone mass – increasing risk of osteoporosis immune function – which increases risk of infection Changes in taste, smell, and teeth Declining kidney function Changes in GI function 2 – dehydration constipation and poor nutrient absorption
