Fall 2010 EMGT 5130: New Business Development 1. Course Information Title: New Business Development Course Number & Section: 5130-01 (Face-To-Face, 32893); 5130-02 (Online; 32894) Class: D202 (Face-to-Face) Time: 7:00 p.m. - 9:50 p.m. Monday 8/23- 12/13 2010. 2. Course Description The objectives of this online class are to expose students with science and technology backgrounds to the state-of-the-art issues, knowledge, and skills of new business development and management, especially as they relate to the way organizations make money. The course concentrates on new business development process and management skills particularly for technology ventures. Topics include the business opportunity analysis, strategy development, risk analysis and management, functional planning, and business plan. Students are expected to analyze business climate of technology ventures and business organizations. They also need to develop the business plan for their choice of a venture company. Individual assignments and team assignments , and the business simulation game are required. Prerequisite: Foundation courses (3 CR) 3. Course Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Explain the concepts and principles for creating successful technology ventures. Apply the business development procedures for unstructured business decision making problems Apply the venture creating procedures to real world venture analysis Develop a solid business plan Develop managerial capability and perspectives beyond technical knowledge. 4. Required Teaching Materials Textbook Technology Ventures: From Idea to Enterprise , 3rd Ed. Richard C. Dorf and Thomas H. Byers©2008, ISBN-13 9780073365046 Business Simulation In addition to the text book above, this course mandatorily requires students to register for the online business simulation program (http://www.capsim.com/) at their expense. I expect you to purchase the game by end of August. The industry code is required and will be issued to you by an instructor. 1
