Section last week Impact factors on climate: 1. Changes of incoming solar radiation; 2. Reflectivity/albedo; 3. Greenhouse gas effects; 4. Land-ocean distribution; 5. Atmosphere - ocean interaction.
Greenhouse Effect Energy TO Earth—short wavelengths Energy FROM Earth—long wavelengths (all bodies with any temperature radiate heat) Greenhouse gases Transparent to short wavelengths (let it in) Absorb long wavelengths (keep it in) In order of importance: H2O, CO2, CH4, O3, N2O, and Halocarbons Cold planet without them! -16C (3F)
Current Greenhouse Gases Carbon dioxide Fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas), burning wood Methane Fossil fuels, swamps, cows, rice paddies, rotting sewage Nitrous Oxide Bacteria, fertilizer, cars Ozone Smog (bad) Stratosphere (good) CFCs Only from humans
