What does it mean in the title of Auden’s poem? The unknown in this instance refers to the anonymous nature of the unknown. Someone who is making it their responsibility to bring issues to light, but yet doesn't want to be a target for consequences. Throughout the poem, he criticizes different parts of society. Everything from government to how people treat the commodities of life. He even criticizes that no one wants to hear what is wrong; sarcastically saying “Had anything been wrong, we should certainly have heard” (29).
