Victoria Graves July 22, 2019 PSYCH-2091 Extra Credit Assignment: 5 Stereotypes Regarding ASD 1. The belief that autism is on the rise is a common misconception. It has been found that more ASD studies have been conducted, and we know more about it than we did in the past, which leads people to believe that there are more cases of ASD. The truth is, many cases went undiagnosed previously. Another factor is that our definition of autism is constantly changing over the years, increasing the number of diagnoses. Even popular websites that are typically trustworthy, like WebMD, have incorrectly suggested that autism rates have increased. 2. Many people believe that vaccines cause autism, as shown in an exceptionally popular Facebook Group called “Vaccination Re-education Discussion Forum”, as well as the movie “Vaxxed”. However, there is no evidence that vaccines correlate with ASD on any level. In class, we learned that ASD is a developmental disorder, and studies show that it is caused by genetic factors as well as environmental factors such as pollution.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
