There have been several opinions on slavery that resulted in one of the longest struggles in American history due to the practical utilitarian and morally conscious common good approach. During this struggle, Benjamin Banneker took a substantial risk to speak to Thomas Jefferson about his feelings toward slavery and how he used the common good approach or emotional appeal to counter the possible utilitarian retorts of Jefferson through allusions to religion and history and the irony of it all, all while using flattering language and respectfully restrained diction.Banneker makes several religious appeals that criticize Jefferson’s pro-slaverystance and point out the blatant irony of Jefferson’s beliefs.
