Welcome to the 2009 American Union Commemoration. My name is Khoa Phan. ( Attention Getter ) Have you ever wondered how all Americans are united in a great country like United States today? ( Purpose ) We are here today to commemorate Hiram Ulysses Grant. ( Brief background ) He was born on April 27, 1822 in an Appalachian Ohio tanner. Grant entered the United States Military Academy at age 17. In 1846, he served as a lieutenant in the MexicanAmerican War. After that, he abruptly resigned in 1854. Struggling through the coming years as a real estate agent, a laborer, and a county engineer, Grant decided to join the Northern effort in the Civil War. With important victories, he was named lieutenant general and general-in-chief of the Army in 1864.
