Sarah H. Short, Ph.D.,Ed.D.,R.D.,Professor of Nutrition, Syracuse University Caffeine     Coffee has been a popular beverage around the world for over a thousand years and tea  for much longer than that.  Caffeine is naturally occurring and is found in the leaves, seeds or  berries of many plants.   People in the United States average over one and a half cups of coffee  per day.  If you enjoy drinking coffee, should you stop or decrease your caffeine intake?  Ask  your physician, but caffeine is probably not as bad as its reputation. 1. What are the sources of caffeine in your diet? Sources of caffeine in the diet are coffee, tea, cola soft drinks, over-the-counter  stimulants, some pain relievers, diuretics, cold remedies, some prescription medications, and  there is a very small amount in chocolate.  Coffee provides the most caffeine.  Mg of caffeine Regular coffee 110-150  8 oz Starbucks coffee  250  (lg=550 mg) Instant coffee   40-100 Tea (brewed 3-5 min)   20- 50 1 c cocoa          4 1 oz milk chocolate          6 1 oz dark chocolate        20 12 oz can Coca-cola/diet coke        45 12 oz can Pepsi        38  12 oz can Mountain Dew        52  12 oz can Jolt        72 Excedrin migraine 1 geltab
