The more exotic the better. • Began off necessity, when anthropologists studied tribal societies, speaking unrecorded language The anthropologist is an outsider, with no status in the community • Outsiders are able to ask things that an insider simply could not • Also can be bad. Perceived as knowing less than a child. Provides a new point of view, allowing one to see the world through a more cultural lens. Establish an Identity • Anxiety and depression. Sleep in late, read papers, and eat a lot. Acceptance in the community • Developing trust. Very personal activity, and must respect them.
