ISS 3-14-2011 11:58 Communication Human society is based on communication Society imposes categories and classifications o On the Natural World (days, years, holidays, etc…) o On people, what and with whom we exchange things Greeting people on the street Cultures are systems for the exchange of energy and information Exchange is not random, but follows a pattern based on socially defined  expectations (symbolic) imposed on social actors Persona culture is a system of exchange between persons: we do not act as  individuals, but as persons acting out a social relationship Individuals act differently depending on the situation Social Structure social structure is the sum of all interactions of the members of a given  society Basic elements of social structure: o Status: define social relationships between persons o Norm: expectations about appropriate behavior relative to any status  relationship o Roles: how the individual acts on these expectations o Sanctions: social mechanism for punishing the violation of norms Status Socially defined relationships that may exist between persons o Ascribed Status: social status determined by birth o Achieved Status: social status earned by individual
