C. Making Contacts (it’s important to get to know ppl)  1.  Local Networks- people who are in your local area.  (Family, friends, neighbors)  Everyone in your local network has access to the same info (disadvantage). 2.  Cosmopolitan Networks- these networks can branch around the world.  These can be  the most valuable things that you acquire from attending a large, prominent university.  You won’t be able to find these widespread networks at community colleges. IV. What Affects Student Performance A. Differences Between Schools-James Coleman’s Work (1960s) Were there books, a TV, radio,  magazines in the home? 1. Importance of  “Cultural Capital”- the intangible experiences, the intangible knowledge that  parents and other early caretakers provide for children.  (Do you have someone to read to  you, teach you the alphabet, teach you numbers?)  What happens within the first few
